Step-by-step screenshot guides without an account or uploads
Short answer: most click-recording guide tools, such as Scribe and Tango, are cloud services: you sign in, and your guides and screenshots are stored in your account so they can be shared as links and edited by a team. If you would rather not create an account, or the screens you record must not leave your computer, use a tool that works locally. ClickTrek records in Chrome, needs no account, and saves the images only to your device.
Cloud guide tools and local guide tools
| Cloud guide tools | ClickTrek (local) | |
|---|---|---|
| Account | Required | Not needed |
| Where screenshots go | Uploaded to the provider | Stay in your browser, then saved to your device |
| How you share | A link to the hosted guide | Image files you paste or attach anywhere |
| Team editing | Usually built in | Not built in; edit in your own document tool |
| Works with | The provider's editor and integrations | Docs, Word, wikis, tickets, chat, email |
When a local tool fits better
- Screens show customer, patient, financial or internal data that shouldn't be stored by a third party.
- Your company doesn't allow new cloud accounts without approval.
- You just need images for a document or ticket, not another place to host guides.
- You want to try something in a minute without signing up.
When a cloud tool fits better
- A team needs to edit and manage a shared library of guides.
- You want guides published as hosted links with view statistics.
- You need to record desktop programs as well as websites.
What ClickTrek sends, exactly
Recording, editing and exporting happen in your browser. ClickTrek does not upload screenshots, page content, clicks, annotations or exported files. If you buy Pro, a licensing service activates it and Stripe handles payment; neither receives screenshot data. See the privacy policy.
Try it without signing up. Install, click Start Recording, and you have your first guide.
